Here’s how to fix black screen issues with the HTC Vive. First, make sure the HDMI cable is firmly plugged in to the HTC Vive and a working HDMI port. If you have a working HDMI port, even better. Then, ensure the HTC Vive is off and the light on the front is green. Finally, make sure the Vive is plugged into a power supply. If you have a power supply that will supply both the HTC Vive and a compatible HTC Vive Audio adapter, you’re set to go.
Over the past week and a half, we’ve been getting a lot of questions / comments / concerns about our news post on fixing the black screen issue with the HTC Vive. We thought we would do a quick post today to answer some of the questions we’ve received about the issue, and hopefully get VR users (and anyone with a Vive) on the right track.
Many HTC Vive owners complain about the occasional black screen issues while using the headset. Others complain about the “screen door” effect while using the Vive, where the image appears not to be as smooth as it should be. The solution for both these issues is to set your Vive display to “off”.
The operating system for the HTC Vive (which allows you to navigate the headset, change the games being played, and so on) isn’t the only issue that needs to be fixed. If you own a Vive, you’ve undoubtedly experienced the dreadful moment when you turn on the headset and are met with a blank screen. The reason for this is simple: the Vive headset has to be calibrated to your eyes. There are a few options for dealing with this, the most frequent of which is to just wait it out. It will ultimately be able to calibrate itself if you keep the headset on.
Virtual reality headsets have become the latest must-have gadgets in recent years. It’s ideal for gamers, but it’s also great for movie buffs and other folks. However, these headsets come with the typical issues: Nothing occurs when you connect your headphones. Even if you know there’s nothing wrong with your headset, you’re trapped with a blank screen.
There are a number of HTC Vive owners out there who are having issues with the black screen. There are a few ways to solve this, but the best approach is to make sure your Vive’s drivers are up to date. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, check sure you have the most recent drivers.
A virtual reality headset’s display is one of the most essential components. When the HTC Vive’s two lenses can’t provide a clear image, it’s essentially rendered useless as a window between you and a variety of virtual worlds.
The HTC Vive’s output, on the other hand, may become totally inaccessible if anything goes wrong behind the scenes. If you’ve been getting a black screen out of nowhere, we’ve put up a list of the most common causes and solutions for virtual reality users.
Reconnect the HTC Vive cables if needed.
Even though it seems to be a simple job, double-check that the HTC Vive’s cables are correctly connected. Pulling on the cable tether may eliminate connections from the link box over time in room-scale games since players are allowed to roam about. It’s also worth double-checking the connections between your PC and headset to make sure that your issues aren’t caused by missing physical cables.
Make sure your HTC Vive matches the setup specified in the manual to ensure the cabling configuration was fitted in the correct order. Due to the symmetrical design of the link box, it is very easy to connect wires to the wrong side of the link box.
‘Direct Mode’ should be disabled.
The HTC Vive comes with “Direct Mode” enabled out of the box, however deactivating it may be a viable solution if you’re experiencing display issues. Even though the video stream is sent directly to the headset by default, if you don’t use Direct Mode, your PC will treat the HTC Vive as an additional external display. The game will then be digitally moved to the bigger panel while keeping a similar appearance.
In the SteamVR desktop application’s Settings menu, disable Direct Mode.
- Start SteamVR on your computer.
- There will be more options in the SteamVR drop-down menu.
- Choose from a variety of choices.
- From the drop-down menu, choose the Developer tab.
- From the drop-down option, choose Disable Direct Mode.
Wait for SteamVR to restart with all of the changes made after following the on-screen directions.
It is necessary to uninstall the drivers.
If your HTC Vive isn’t working properly, consider restarting the headset’s USB drivers, which will restore the headset’s out-of-the-box functionality. This is a fantastic way to fix software-related issues with your headset without having to use Steam VR.
- All cables should be disconnected from the HTC Vive connecting box.
- Navigate to SteamVR > Settings > Developer.
- Scroll all the way down to remove all SteamVR USB Devices.
- Restart SteamVR to see the changes take effect.
The downloads for the USB devices should begin soon once you reconnect your headset. This should automatically install drivers for the major HTC Vive devices, similar to the original out-of-the-box experience.
