(CBSLA) – LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Despite a recent increase in coronavirus infections in Los Angeles County owing to the highly infectious Delta variety, the county’s public health director believes there may be some good news on the way.

Dr. Barbara Ferrer, the director of the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, stated Thursday that the number of infections is dropping and the rate of testing positive is decreasing, indicating that the outbreak may be coming to an end.
On Thursday, the county recorded 3,672 new COVID-19 infections and 19 fatalities from the illness.
According to Ferrer, the county’s current rate of new cases is 21.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 24 per 100,000 the previous week. The average daily rate of individuals testing positive for the virus is 4.73 percent, down from last week by a whole percentage point.
“Although today’s rate will likely vary somewhat when more test results are released in the following days,” Ferrer added, “this does indicate to us that our increase in cases may be leveling out.”

According to Ferrer, the county had a 22 percent week-over-week rise in new cases on Aug. 1, while the rest of the state saw a 57 percent increase. This is an indication, she added, that the virus is spreading more slowly in L.A. County, which adopted a strict indoor mask-wearing requirement in mid-July.
“It’s too early to tell whether the mask requirement contributed to the county’s improvement,” Ferrer added, “but I know for sure it did.”
Vaccination efforts are also increasing in the county, with more than 81,000 initial doses given in the week ending Aug. 1 — the third week in a row the number has risen, following a lengthy period of decreases.

6.22 million county residents aged 12 and above have received at least one dosage, and 5.45 million have got all three doses. 61 percent of the county’s 10.3 million inhabitants have gotten at least one dose of vaccination, and 53 percent are completely vaccinated, including more than a million who aren’t eligible for the injections.
Ferrer emphasized the virus’s threat to unvaccinated individuals, saying that between May 1 and July 17, unvaccinated residents were almost four times more likely to get COVID than vaccinated ones. Only 8% of the 3,158 individuals in the county who were hospitalized at that time were completely immunized.
As of Thursday morning, there were 1,370 coronavirus patients in L.A. County hospitals, with 297 of them in critical care, according to state data.
According to Ferrer, 95.2 percent of individuals aged 16 and older who died from COVID in Los Angeles County between April 1 and July 18 were unvaccinated.
As of Aug. 3, 15,628 individuals in the county who had been completely vaccinated had tested positive for the virus, representing a 0.31 percent infection rate. Only 446 people were admitted to hospitals, a rate of 0.009%, and 41 people died, a rate of 0.0008%.
